A start in the Flying Stakes is still up in the air for NZ Cup hope AKUTA and much will depend on how he comes through some intensive treatment in the next few days.

Akuta and two year old SPECIAL OCCASION  both came up with airways mucus infections after disappointing at Addington last week and the stable is concentrating on solving the problem before upcoming features.

“They are on antibiotics and nebulised twice a day” Nathan said.

“We will probably do an assessment in the middle of next week and decide then whether the Ashburton Flying Stakes is a realistic option for Akuta. He is well in himself and its not until they are under race pressure that these things show. The pollen carried on the wind down here is the likely cause we think”

The Kaikoura Cup could come into play if Ashburton is bypassed but all the balls are in the air subject to the rate of recovery. Akuta has been in work most of the year and this will stand to him in any interruptions to his Cup programme.

Meanwhile CHASE A DREAM came through Thursday’s trial in top order and may race at Ashburton.

“Dad was thrilled with the way he went today” Nathan said.

“He may make Ashburton and then it is a case of assessing whether there is a suitable race for him here or consider Kaikoura in his leadup to the Junior Free for All in Cup week”

MIDNIGHT MIKI and OSCAR BONAVENA represent the stable at Addington,Friday, while Just UsTwo will run in a two year old event at Cambridge tonight. The two year old ARDEN’S MEMORY is likely to resume in Auckland next week with a campaign at a higher level in the offing if all goes well.

“Miki is going along well. He is sharper now and able to take advantage if he gets the right run in this field”  Midnight Miki (8.38pm) has drawn awkwardly and shares second row favouritism with former stablemate Five Crowns at $4.50 behind the northerner Greased Lightnin in the $50,000 Sophomore Classic.

OSCAR BONAVENA continues on his merry way and the 2600 will play into his favour this week.

PIC: Midnight Miki is in the right place for a change of luck at Addington Thursday
