An August  rather than September resuming date now seems likely for former star pacer Akuta,a reflection of how well he is doing on the comeback trail.

“I went over and drove him this week.He was really good. He has trials to come but at this stage the Maurice Holmes Vase is  the aim” Mark Purdon said.

“He has been in work a long time. Not sharp sprinting work but he has done a lot of conditioning stuff so if all goes well l he should come on fairly quickly now with speed work”

Akuta has been in the hands of Tony Shaw who now holds a minority share in the ownership of Akuta with Mark. The estate of the late Ian Dobson owns 75 per cent.

Akuta had a full year off after a tendon operation and a return to his former form will add considerable interest to what is already an interesting spring harness scene
